Screams and stressed and afraid mews rang out into the moonlit night, and Thrushfur turned around to see what was going on. He saw his apprentice, Mudpaw, sitting in front of a pile of fallen dirt and rocks, that held a fox and...... The dead body of Ravensong. He rand over to his apprentice as fast as he could.
"Mudpaw! What's happened?" He meowed. His apprentice didn't look at him. Instead, Mudpaw still stared at the body of his clanmate.
"I............. No....... Ravensong is.... He's.......... My fault...." Mudpaw stuttered, and Thrushfur could understand only a few words and phrases.
"Thrushfur." He turned around to see Silverstorm, the mentor of another stunned cat, Fawnpaw. "Mudpaw and Fawnpaw were fighting a fox. And Ravensong saved them. But now, he's....." The silver she-cat looked toward the limp body of the black and white cat.
Thrushfur looked back at Mudpaw, astonished. Despite his normally mean attitude, he wrapped his tail around the scared cat.
"Mudpaw, it's not your fault." He meowed softly. "If he hadn't done anything, both you and Fawnpaw would be like him right now."
"But... Maybe it...... if it........ me....." Mudpaw mumbled.
"What was that?"
"....... Maybe.... maybe it would have been better if it were me who died..."
"Mudpaw! No, no, Starclan! Don't think like that, Mudpaw. You're the best apprentice a cat could ask for. Don't you go thinking those things."
Suddenly, Mudpaw thrust his face into Thrushfur's light brown chest. Thrushfur jumped a little at first, but then rested his chin on the younger cat's head.
"Thrushfur.... It's all my fault.... Why would Starclan let this happen!?"
"Mudpaw... It'll be okay. Everything will be just fine, okay? He died fighting, like a true warrior."

's clan assignment. Ravensong has died fighting a fox to save two apprentices in danger, and Thrushfur must calm down his apprentice, Mudpaw.
